During an inspection looking at part of the service

The provider described how he was now meeting this essential standard. We saw the provider had a continuous assessment of the treatment people received by means of a survey. The provider used these comments to make changes within the surgery. We saw the provider had collated the information from the returned patient surveys and the results were displayed in the waiting room.

We saw the provider had recently updated his training on Medical Exposure Regulations (IRMER). This included five hours of core training and a knowledge test.

The provider was able to show us the Radiation Protection File had been completed and all the essential testing and audits of the equipment had been carried out.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We saw evidence that staff had undertaken training in equality and diversity, customer service, X-ray mounting and processing, decontamination, cross infection, sedation, medication and drug abuse, gum disease, first aid and oral healthcare.

Each person was responsible for maintaining the records of the training they had received. The provider told us they kept a record of all staff training.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

Following our last inspection in November 2012 the provider completed an action plan which detailed improvements he planned to make. The provider has made significant improvements to the practice since that date.

We saw the provider had bought an illuminated magnifier and other items that were used in the cleaning and sterilising of equipment.

We saw the provider had carried out testing for the Legionella virus and had followed correct guidance to ensure people who used the service were protected from infection.

We saw people who used the service being asked to complete medical history reviews and sign consent forms, a review of records showed this has been maintained.

We saw the provider has carried out appropriate checks on all staff working at the practice and had reviewed the Continuing Professional Development required by the General Dental Council.

30 October and 1 November 2012

During a routine inspection

People we spoke with were happy about the treatment they received. One person told us "They're very nice here."

People said staff were friendly and polite and always treated them with respect.

Not all of the people we spoke with were given information about their treatment options available to them. In addition patient records weren't always updated with relevant information.

We also found staff were not adequately trained in certain areas and were not fully supported in their roles. Staff training was not reviewed meaning the provider could not be sure staff had fulfilled the required number of hours to retain their registration with the General Dental Council (GDC)
