Our current view of the service
Updated

We carried out an announced on-site inspection on 27 July 2026. As the provider was unavailable, a remote inspection was carried out on 14 August 2026.
We found the practice had met regulations.
The practice had effective systems to identify and manage risks, including infection prevention and control.
Staff had the skills, knowledge and experience to carry out their roles.
Recruitment procedures reflected current legislation and there was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
Staff provided care and treatment in line with current guidance. They treated patients with dignity and respect and ensured access to care, support, and treatment when required.
The practice is in Truro, Cornwall and provides private dental care and treatment for adults and children.
The practice was unable to provide step free access due to the location of the building. Car parking spaces were available, including dedicated parking for disabled people, near the practice.
The practice had 2 treatment rooms. At the time of our inspection, there was a total of 6 staff, of which there was 1 dentist, 2 dental nurses, 1 dental therapist, 1 dental hygienist and the practice manager. We gathered feedback from staff and spoke to the dentist and 1 dental nurse during our inspection.
People's experience of the service

Two weeks before our inspection, we asked the practice to encourage patients to share their views of the service with us. We reviewed patient feedback we received, and feedback routinely obtained by the practice. Patient feedback provided a positive view of the dental team and care provided by the practice.
Comments included, “I have nothing but good to say about this dentist. Quality of patient care, professionalism, hygiene. All amazing. Staff are very friendly and welcoming. Would recommend them to anyone.” Also, “All of the staff are really friendly and reception is super efficient at appointments / reminders. The surgery is really clean and a pleasant space to be in. [Dentist] is fantastic at explaining what he is doing and what needs to be done and what the options are. He also seems to be really good at the procedures! The whole team minimises the stress of being in the chair with their contributions.”
Patients commented positively about the standards of cleanliness.
We were told, “The premises are clean, comfortable and well appointed.” Also, “The waiting area is well furnished, clean and comfortable - even though one does not spend much time in there as appointments are dealt with punctually.”
Patients felt able to book appointments within an acceptable timescale for their needs and said they had enough time during their appointment without feeling rushed. We were told, “I have always found the service to be first class. My perspective is that the service offered is totally patient centred, responsive, efficient, time sensitive and always in my best interests. My wife and children have also been very longstanding patients and we have all been very impressed with the responsive service both for routine treatment and also on occasions when we have had concerns and had to contact the service out of hours. For example, when my daughter broke her upper front teeth, it was very reassuring for my wife to be able to pick up the phone and get straight through to [Dentist] out of hours and be given pragmatic advice and have an immediate plan put in place.”
Patients told us they were given clear information to help them make an informed choice about their treatment and any associated costs. They were involved in decisions about their care.
We were told, “After deciding on the solution from the choices and recommendations offered [Dentist] explains what exactly he is going to do and carries out the work carefully and professionally with appropriate pain relief if necessary. I particularly like that he anticipates future problems and suggests how I can minimise the risk by targeted brushing and flossing.”
Patients said when they were prescribed medicines, sufficient information was given.
Patients told us that they were supported to maintain their oral health and were provided with appropriate information and resources.
We were told, “Every time I've been to Ocean Dental I feel looked after and listened to if I'm anxious. [Dentist] has always been detailed when he speaks about my teeth and care going forward and the rest of the staff are also excellent and very friendly.”
The practice shared patient feedback with the team. We were told this was reviewed and where suggestions had been made, appropriate action would be taken.
