During a routine inspection

Prior to our visit we reviewed all the information we had received from the provider. The inspection took place over two days. During the visit we spoke with six people who used the service and three relatives and asked them for their views. We also spoke with four care workers, a team leader, the deputy manager and the registered and operations managers. We also looked at some of the records held in the service including the care files for five people. We observed the support people who used the service received from staff and carried out a brief tour of the building.

We found where people were able to they gave consent to their care and support. A person told us' 'The staff are very, very good, they do the care I want how I like it.'

We found people did not receive care and support that met their needs. Food and fluid intake charts were not fully completed, and they were not used to establish the food and fluid intake a person had during the day. A staff member told us, 'The charts don't benefit the residents, they are not accurate. It is not good.' We also found care plans were not kept up to date, so they did not show how staff should respond when people's needs had changed.

We found that suitable arrangements were in place to manage people's medication and ensure they received any medication they needed. A person who used the service told us, 'I have my tablets when I am meant to. If I need a painkiller they give me one or two whichever I ask for.'

The staffing levels were increased during the inspection to ensure there were sufficient and suitable staff employed. A relative said, 'Two staff is not enough. He (their relation) needs two staff which means there is no one to look after the others.'

We found the provider assessed and monitored the quality of the service and responded to any complaints that were made. A relative told us the manager was very approachable and said, 'The office door is always open, I feel I can raise anything I want to.'

People who used the service told us that they were very satisfied with the quality of service provision. Comments included, "All the staff are very good. I like it here, it's very comfortable and it's a pleasant place to be." Another person told us, 'The staff are all grand lasses, very caring.'

People told us that they received input and treatment from health care professionals such as their GP, specialist nurses and the chiropodist when required.

People told us that they felt safe in the home and felt the staff had the right qualifications, skills and knowledge to perform their duties in a safe manner.

We found that people were provided with the opportunity to comment on the quality of service provision as annual questionnaires and bi-monthly residents meetings were undertaken.

People residing at the home, and their relatives, told us that they were very happy with the quality of the environment and said that the recent environmental improvements, made within the home, had greatly enhanced the quality of the service.

People told us that they felt that all the staff employed at the home were confident in performing their duties. We also found that the care staff had received a training package to meet their individual needs.
