During an assessment under our new approach

We had previously undertaken an on-site inspection on 6 November 2025 under Section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions.

We found the registered provider was not providing well-led care and was in breach of Regulation 17 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014.

We undertook a follow up on-site inspection on 8 April 2026.

This inspection was carried out to review the actions taken by the registered provider to improve the quality of care and to confirm that the practice was now meeting legal requirements.

We found the practice had met regulations.

The practice had systems to manage risks.

Recruitment procedures reflected current legislation.

Infection control procedures followed published guidance.

Patients’ care and treatment was provided in line with current guidance.

Patients were treated with dignity and respect.

The practice is in Bristol and provides private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

There was step-free access to the practice and car parking spaces available, including parking for disabled people, outside the practice.

The practice had 4 treatment rooms.

During our inspection we spoke with the head nurse and the practice manager.

During an assessment under our new approach

We carried out this announced on-site inspection on 6 November 2025.

We found the practice had not met all regulations.

Staff treated patients with dignity and respect and ensured access to care, support, and treatment when required.

The practice had safeguarding processes, and staff knew their responsibilities for safeguarding.

Staff obtained patients’ consent to care and treatment in line with legislation and guidance.

We found shortfalls in appropriately assessing and mitigating risks in relation to hazardous substances, legionella and infection prevention and control.

Although recruitment procedures reflected current legislation, these were not always followed, and oversight should be improved.

Training was not monitored to ensure staff were up to date with their mandatory training and their continuing professional development (CPD).

The management of fire safety required improvement to ensure national guidance was followed.

Although there are issues to be addressed, the impact of our concerns relates to the governance and the oversight of the risks, rather than a patient safety risk.

The practice is in Bristol and provides private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

The practice is fully accessible to wheelchair users. Car parking is available next to the practice.

The practice had 4 treatment rooms.

At the time of our inspection, there was a total of 23 staff, of which there were 6 dentists, 1 periodontist, 1 endodontist, 2 hygienists, 6 registered dental nurses, 3 trainee dental nurses, 3 administration and reception staff and the practice manager.

We gathered feedback from staff and spoke to a range of staff during our inspection, including 2 dentists, 1 hygienist, a treatment coordinator, 1 nurse and the practice manager.

The provider was not complying with Regulation 17 – Good Governance.
Full details of the regulation the provider was not meeting are within the inspection report.

We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this inspection.

25 October 2013

During a routine inspection

During our visit on the 25 October 2013 we spoke with four people who used the service. We looked at five patient's treatment plans of people who had recently visited and were visiting the surgery. People told us, "I've been coming here for many years and staff are very friendly". Other comments included 'my husband has said he's very happy, over the moon' and 'they were recommended to us and I've now recommended them to others'.

Sleep Lane Smiles was based in a purpose built building, offering easy access for those with mobility concerns. There were two clinical rooms, a separate decontamination room and a spacious reception area. We saw that people were spoken with in a friendly and quiet manner and their privacy was maintained.

The practice was clean and well maintained, equipment regularly serviced, treatment plans held securely and staff appropriately trained and qualified.

The service carried out audits of various aspects of the service. This meant that they could be assured of the quality and safety of their service delivered to the people who used the service.
