During a routine inspection

We spoke with six relatives' of service users. Overall, their comments were positive. They used words to describe the service such as ''they always turn up, occasionally they are late but they always turn up'' A relative stated that when a carer was late they phoned the on call number and someone phoned back. We asked people if they felt that there was anything they would change about the service. We were told that continuity of care and communication could be better. Sometimes a different carer had to attend and they were not always informed in advance. Sometimes when a carer was late people were not informed by the office, but the carer would state that they had asked the office staff to contact the service user.

Three out of four relatives thought that the carers had sufficient time to meet the needs of their relative. One person stated that the staff would not leave if there was any aspect of care not carried out. One person felt that there was not enough time allocated and that on occasions a door had been left unlocked because they felt that the staff had been rushed. We asked what was the best thing about the service. One relative said '' Reliability that someone will come, even if a little late or a different carer.''

Following completion of the Annual Quarterly Service Framework Review by Wigan Social Services any identified actions have now been achieved and the provider continues to develop the Annual Development Business plan.
