All Inspections

25 October 2022

During a routine inspection

We carried out this announced comprehensive inspection on 25 October 2022 under section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered practice was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we always ask the following 5 questions:

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it caring?

• Is it responsive to people’s needs?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

  • The dental clinic appeared to be visibly clean and well-maintained.
  • The practice had infection control procedures which reflected published guidance.
  • Staff knew how to deal with medical emergencies. Appropriate medicines and life-saving equipment were available.
  • The practice had systems to help them manage risk to patients and staff.
  • Safeguarding processes were in place and staff knew their responsibilities for safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.
  • The practice had staff recruitment procedures which reflected current legislation.
  • The clinical staff provided patients’ care and treatment in line with current guidelines.
  • Patients were treated with dignity and respect and staff took care to protect their privacy and personal information.
  • Staff provided preventive care and supported patients to ensure better oral health.
  • The appointment system took account of patients’ needs.
  • There was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Staff felt involved and supported and worked as a team.
  • Staff and patients were asked for feedback about the services provided.
  • Complaints were dealt with positively and efficiently.
  • The dental clinic had information governance arrangements.

Background

Ashley House Specialist Dental Group is in Banstead, Surrey and provides private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

There is level access to the practice for people who use wheelchairs and those with pushchairs. The practice has a dedicated car park for patients. There are also parking spaces available on surrounding roads.

The practice is a specialist referral centre for endodontics, prosthodontics, restorative, periodontal and orthodontic treatment. The dental team includes a principal dentist, 7 associate specialist dentists, 4 dental nurses, 1 dental hygienist, 1 dental hygiene therapist and 1 practice manager (who is also a qualified dental nurse). The dental nurses and practice manager provide reception cover. The practice has 3 treatment rooms.

During the inspection we spoke with the principal dentist, 2 dental nurses and the practice manager. We looked at practice policies and procedures and other records about how the service is managed.

The practice is open:

Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm

Friday 8am to 3.30pm

There were areas where the provider could make improvements. They should:

  • Implement an effective system for monitoring and recording the fridge temperature to ensure that medicines and dental care products are being stored in line with the manufacturer’s guidance.

Implement an effective recruitment procedure to ensure that appropriate checks are completed prior to new staff commencing employment at the practice.

1 May 2013

During a routine inspection

As part of our inspection we spoke with three patients who used the service about the support and treatment they received. They told us they were happy with the service they received. One person said "They are very good" and "I'm very happy with it here".

We looked at the records for five patients. We found these included patients' treatment plans, medical histories, visit dates and the treatments patients had received.

We spoke with two members of staff who said they had received training for safeguarding vulnerable adults and children. They told us that they felt confident with reporting any concerns they had so that the appropriate action would be taken.

We saw that the service had the appropriate policies in place to manage infection control effectively. We also found that good infection control procedures were followed.
