During an inspection looking at part of the service

We found the provider had implemented all the changes detailed in their action plan provided to the Care Quality Commission (CQC) after the previous inspection in November 2013. A process for ensuring the current medical status of patients had been implemented and checks were performed to ensure this activity was maintained. This meant patients could be sure treatment options took account of any medical conditions and were adjusted to meet their needs.

The risks of cross contamination and infection had been reduced due to the implementation of updated infection control policies, and general cleaning policies. In addition all staff had received updated training on decontamination and cleaning procedures and been observed performing these processes to ensure understanding and compliance. A risk assessment of the water systems had been performed and corrective actions put in place. A regular programme of auditing had been introduced to ensure the practice could continue to meet the required standards.

A programme of regular audits had been introduced to ensure oversight of the clinical work, the environment, the equipment and hygiene needs of the practice. In addition patient surveys had taken place and ways for patients to give feedback more easily had been introduced.

During a routine inspection

During our visit to Witney Dental Practice we spoke with four members of staff. We spoke with two dentists who were the partners in the practice. We spoke with four patients and looked at four patient's records.

All of the patients were very happy with the dental treatment they received. One patient told us 'I can't fault them'. Another patient said 'He [the dentist] talks you through [the diagnosis and treatment options]. You feel you're part of the decision'.

We looked at four patient records and saw that medical histories were not checked on the day that treatment was provided. There was a risk that the dentist may not be aware of patient's medication or current health status when providing treatment.

Staff told us they were supported to carry out their roles. We saw that staff received training specific to their job.

The practice did not always follow procedures that minimised the risk and spread of infection.

The practice did not regularly carry out audits to monitor and improve the quality of the service. Where audits had been completed it was not clear what the results were or what action had been taken to improve the service. The practice did not operate systems to regularly seek and act on patient feedback.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four people by telephone, who had recently used the service and one patient who was attending for treatment at the time of our visit. All were complimentary about the quality of service provided at the practice. People told us they were informed about their treatment and had been involved in making decisions about their care. They told us that staff were "highly impressive" competent professionals who were "friendly and kind".
