Equity in access

Regulations met

Staff had carried out a disability access audit and had an action plan to continually improve access for patients.

Due to the limitations of the building, the practice was not wheelchair accessible. However, staff described the reasonable adjustments they had made to help ensure the practice was as accessible as possible. For example, there was a ground floor treatment room available. Staff could also provide visual aids for patients, offer support with reviewing and signing documents, and had access to a hearing loop, language translation and sign language services.

Staff were clear about the importance of providing emotional support to patients when delivering care. For example, they provided additional appointment reminders for older patients who may otherwise miss their appointments. Staff also described accompanying a patient on their walk to the practice to provide reassurance and support for their wellbeing.

The practice supported more vulnerable members of society, for example, patients living with dementia or adults and children with a learning disability.

The practice displayed its opening hours and provided information on their website, patient information leaflet and social media page.

The frequency of appointments was agreed between the dentist and the patient, giving due regard to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines.

The practice provided telephone numbers for patients needing emergency dental treatment during the working day and when the practice was not open.

At the time of our inspection, patients who needed an urgent appointment were offered one in a timely manner. When the practice was unable to offer an urgent appointment, they worked with partner organisations to support urgent access for patients.

The practice engaged children and families through activities held within the practice. For example, staff organised seasonal events such as Halloween pumpkin competitions and Easter egg decorating. Children were also offered colouring activities, with bubbles, bouncy balls and small trophies provided following appointments to help create a positive dental experience.
