During an inspection looking at part of the service

During the inspection we spoke with two patients, the practice manager and the dentist. We also looked at patients' records and staff files. We noted that care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare. People's records contained medical history and treatment plans which were signed by the patients. This indicated that patients' needs were identified and met by the clinic.

The clinic had health and safety arrangements in place to ensure risks to the patients were managed. Emergency equipment such as oxygen cylinder, first aid kit and emergency drugs were available and maintained for use when needed.

At our last inspection on 11 February 2013 we judged that people's care records were not all held securely as paper records were stored in non lockable cabinets located in a communal reception area. During this inspection we noted that the filing cabinets were fitted with locks and patients' records were stored securely.

11 February 2013

During a routine inspection

We were unable to speak to patients on the day of the visit due to the limited space and thus lack of privacy. We noted that the atmosphere in the practice was professional and there was a friendly ambiance. There was evidence that patients were treated with respect and dignity and that they were provided with good information regarding treatment options, cost of treatment and how to complain. The practice used a suggestion book in the waiting area and surveys as tools to garner patient views and took action to address identified issues to improve the service based on the feedback.

The practice ensured that the care provided to patients was appropriate to their needs and that cleanliness and infection control was maintained at a high standard. Staff were supported and trained appropriately. We found that whilst electronic patient notes were stored securely, paper notes were not. The provider recognised this to be an issue and stated that efforts would be made to immediately rectify this.
