During a routine inspection

We spoke with seven people who were using this service. One person referred to the staff as, "Helpful and kind". Another person told us that, 'The food is good and if l have any questions the staff will help'. Someone else said that, 'I did some gardening yesterday and planted some seeds with the help of staff'.

People had a care plan that was based on assessments of their health, physical and emotional needs. Most care plans were up to date, although we saw examples where assessments and care plans had not been reviewed in line with the stated timescales.

The service did not have a comprehensive safeguarding vulnerable adults policy and not all staff had received their training about this.

There were thorough recruitment checks in place that included making sure staff appointed were appropriate to work with vulnerable people. We saw that there were enough staff on duty to meet people's needs effectively.

The provider did not have systems in place for the assessment and monitoring of the quality of the service provided to people. There was a complaints process in place but the policy needed to be updated and a procedure set up to deal with any complaints received in the future.

During a routine inspection

We were able to speak with two people using the service and also with visitors to the home. One person living at the home told us, "It's warm, we're fed well and there are nice people here." Another person said, "You can stay in your room or go to the lounge if you want to." A visitor described how staff would ring them if there was anything wrong and confirmed the home had all the family contact details. People told us they were happy and content. They appreciated everything that staff did to help and support them and said that staff were very friendly.

We also observed how people were cared for in communal areas of the home. We saw that staff were patient and calm and did not out-pace the person they were speaking with. Staff were warm and friendly at all times and offered choices around food, where people sat and what they wanted to do. Two people were enjoying having their finger nails painted and were having a laugh and joke with the staff. We saw people being encouraged to join in activities if they wanted to and being given support to take part where necessary.
