In-Health MRI - Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) service based in Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital. MRI is a type of scan that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. This service has a single MRI scanner and provides scans for children and adults of any age.

This service has been registered to provide diagnostic and screening services since June 2015. They provide MRI scans for sick and injured NHS patients referred primarily from Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

We carried out a comprehensive unannounced assessment of this service on 13 May 2026. Two inspectors and a specialist advisor with expertise in MRI carried out the inspection. The reason for the inspection was an aged rating. The service was last inspected in April 2019 and was rated good.

We rated the service as Good overall because;

  • The scanning room had appropriate warning signs displayed.

  • In the event of unexpected urgent clinical findings there was a clear process to follow.

  • There was a structured post graduate development programme.

  • All the magnetic resonance imaging staff had a current staff appraisal.

  • Staff demonstrated an understanding of the patients and the dignity of patients was maintained.

  • Referrals were prioritised by clinical urgency.

  • The management team were described as approachable, open and honest.

  • The service had a clinical governance framework with links and representation on the local NHS trust meetings.

  • Risks were assessed, recorded and where applicable recorded on the risk register and escalated to senior managers.

  • There was a formal on-call system in place to deal with urgent scans.
