During an inspection in response to concerns

We spoke with six people living in the home during this visit. We also reviewed progress on improvements made by the provider since our last visit on 2 December 2011.

People told us that staff encouraged them to make decisions for themselves, such as what they liked to eat, what time they got up and went to bed and what they did during the day. One person told us, "I enjoy my meals here. The cook is good and will make you something special if you ask."

We found that one person was not being given the opportunity to open their own post, because staff were concerned that they might forget to tell them about hospital appointments. The manager agreed to update the person's care plan to inform staff that the person should open their own post with staff support.

Six people told us that their health and personal care needs were being met. One person said, "If I'm not feeling well staff ask the doctor to come and see me. They also let my relatives know if I am not well."

Five people said they liked the meals provided in the home and that portion sizes were suitable for their needs. One person commented, "You can ask for more if you like."

Five people said that they liked the staff and felt safe living in the home. When asked what they would do if they had any concerns, one person told us, "I'd go to the head one. I'm confident that she would deal with it."

One person told us they were, "Fed up." They said they would like to go out more. When we told the manager about this she made arrangements for this to happen.

We spoke to some visitors to the home who told us 'A lot has improved here,' 'They do meet the care needs of 'x' but sometimes there is a lack of attention to detail,' 'They had a meeting after 6 weeks to review the placement,' 'They phone and let me know if there is a problem if 'x' is ill,' 'I can visit whenever,' 'Possessions have never been lost, ' 'I would tell the manager if I had any concerns, I know that she would listen and act on what I told her, ' 'I feel I can leave and know 'x' is safe,' 'x' always looks clean and tidy, nails are always clean and clothes are never stained' and 'I feel the staff are competent and can identify if people are not safe. '

We spoke to some staff who told us 'The manager is very supportive,' 'I can speak to the manager or deputy manager at any time, ' 'The managers are very approachable and don't mind us asking questions' and 'I had a supervision meeting last week and have done 10 training courses in the first 3 months of working here.'

As part of this review process we contacted Trafford Commissioners and Trafford Local Involvement Networks (LINks). LINKs are groups of individual members of the public and local voluntary/community groups who work together to improve health and social care services. They gather the views of local people and use them to influence how health and social care is commissioned and delivered.
