During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this announced focused inspection on 30 March 2022 under section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered practice was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a Care Quality Commission, (CQC), inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we usually ask five key questions, however due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and to reduce time spent on site, only the following three questions were asked:

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

  • The dental clinic appeared to be visibly clean and well-maintained.
  • The practice had infection control procedures which reflected published guidance.
  • Staff knew how to deal with medical emergencies. Appropriate medicines and life-saving equipment were available.
  • The practice had systems to help them manage risk to patients and staff.
  • Safeguarding processes were in place and staff knew their responsibilities for safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.
  • The practice had staff recruitment procedures which reflected current legislation.
  • The clinical staff provided patients’ care and treatment in line with current guidelines.
  • Patients were treated with dignity and respect and staff took care to protect their privacy and personal information.
  • Staff provided preventive care and supported patients to ensure better oral health.
  • There was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Staff felt involved and supported and worked as a team.
  • Staff and patients were asked for feedback about the services provided.
  • The dental clinic had information governance arrangements.

Background

Butterfly Dental Care Limited - Altrincham provides private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

There is level access to the practice for people who use wheelchairs and those with pushchairs. The practice has a dedicated car park.

The dental team includes two dentists, seven dental nurses (three of whom also have management roles) and one dental therapist. The practice has two treatment rooms.

During the inspection we spoke with one dentist, three dental nurses and the dental therapist. We looked at practice policies and procedures and other records about how the service is managed.

The practice is open:

Monday from 8:30am to 6:00pm

Tuesday from 8:30am to 6:00pm

Wednesday from 8:30am to 5:00pm

Thursday from 8:30am to 6:00pm

Friday from 8:30am to 3:00pm

There were areas where the provider could make improvements. They should:

  • Improve the practice's systems for ensuring equipment is maintained according to the relevant guidance and ensure that all equipment is well maintained.
  • Implement an effective system of checks of medical emergency equipment and medicines taking into account the guidelines issued by the Resuscitation Council (UK) and the General Dental Council.

During a routine inspection

The principal dentist told us they will be submitting an application to become the registered manager for this service.

One patient wrote in a survey, "Comfortable, welcoming and always addressed by name; it makes such a difference." Two patients told us, "The staff are always very helpful. It's a great personal service" and "The staff are respectful and helpful.

Patient surveys contained positive feedback on the quality of care and treatment provided by this practice. Two patients commented as follows, "All friendly staff and a fantastic job on my teeth" and "Impressed with the level of care shown." Two patients told us, "They are very good with people who are nervous. I also like the fact that they don't do treatments that are unnecessary" and "It's a very professional service."

Suitable arrangements were in place to safeguard the welfare of vulnerable adult and child patients if it was suspected they were at risk of abuse.

Dental staff received good support from management to learn new skills and to continue their professional development. One of the dental nurses told us, "Everyone feels that they can just come and talk to each other." A patient said staff were well informed.

Butterfly Dental Care Limited had a robust system in place to monitor, review, audit and improve the quality of the service provided to patients. Where gaps and shortfalls had been found corrective action had been taken in the best interests of the patients who used the service.
