During an inspection looking at part of the service

A routine inspection took place in September 2013 which identified patients were not protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had not been followed by the practice. We also found that emergency equipment and medicines were not monitored to ensure they were available when needed. Both of these concerns were judged to have had a minor impact on people who used the service.

The provider was required to submit a plan detailing the action they were taking to ensure compliance with both of these standards and the date at which they would be compliant. The provider told us in their plan that they would be compliant with this standard by 8 October 2013.

At this inspection we found that the provider had taken appropriate measures to achieve compliance with both the standards.

There were effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection and there were arrangements in place to deal with foreseeable emergencies

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with five people, two dental nurses, a hygienist, the practice manager and a dentist. People we spoke with told us they were satisfied with the information they received about their treatment options. One person told us that they had their treatment explained to them and they signed to say they had agreed to it.

We observed that care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare. One person said; "Staff are respectful, polite and treatment is carefully done'.

There were arrangements in place to deal with foreseeable emergencies, which included staff training, but checks on equipment and medicines were not effective.

Infection control systems were set up to reduce the risk and spread of infection, however these were not being followed.

There was enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs. One member of staff told us they could always have assistance from a colleague when needed.

There was an effective complaints system available. Comments and complaints people made were responded to appropriately. Four of the five people we spoke with told us they knew how to complain and the fifth person told us they did not know what the system was to complain but had never needed to.
