Safeguarding
The provider worked with people and healthcare partners to understand what being safe meant to them and the best way to achieve that. Staff concentrated on improving people’s lives while protecting their right to live in safety, free from bullying, harassment, abuse, discrimination, avoidable harm and neglect. The provider shared concerns quickly and appropriately.
Staff were aware of their role and responsibility to safeguard people from avoidable harm. Clear policies and procedures were in place. These included details about how to report and record any concerns. There had been no safeguarding concerns raised about the care provided in the 6 months prior to our assessment. People felt safe receiving care from Sante Care at Home. One person said, “Oh yes, definitely safe.”
Involving people to manage risks
The provider always worked well with people to fully understand and manage risks by thinking holistically. Staff provided care that fully met people’s needs and was safe, supportive and enabled people to do the things that mattered to them.
The management team undertook detailed assessments when people began using the service to identify information about risks to their safety and welfare. Detailed care records were in place identifying these risks and instructed staff about how to support people to minimise and manage those risks. Information was included about previous infections and any risk of recurrent infections, so action could be taken to prevent this. People told us staff were well informed about any risks to their safety and what support they required. They said staff supported them to undertake exercises and prepare themselves before moving and transferring.
Staff were aware of how people behaved and how their lifestyle choices impacted on risk behaviour. They respected people’s choices and gave them information about how their behaviour impacted upon their safety and welfare, but supported them to live how they chose to.
Staff worked with people to explore any previous trauma they had experienced and how this had impacted on their emotional welfare at the time of the incident and how it continued to affect them on a day to day basis.
Staff were well informed about risk management and had received appropriate training so they had the skills and knowledge to keep people safe.
Safe environments
We did not look at Safe environments during this assessment. The score for this quality statement is based on the previous rating for Safe.
Safe and effective staffing
The provider made sure there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff, who received effective support, supervision and development. They worked together well to provide safe care that met people’s individual needs.
Safe recruitment practices were in place to ensure suitable staff were employed. People were allocated a team of care workers who provided them with live in care. This enabled them to get to know the staff supporting them, and for staff to get to know them and their needs. Staff completed a regular programme of training to ensure they had the skills and knowledge they required to undertake their role. People told us they “definitely” felt their staff had the skills to undertake their role and provide them with high-quality safe care. Staff received regular supervision and felt well supported in their role. They told us they were always able to get in contact with the registered manager, including out of usual office hours. A staff member said, “I feel supported in every way and management are easy to contact. If I have any concerns, they take it into consideration and try to resolve it in a way that fits everyone’s needs.”
