During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this desk-based review on 15 September 2020 under section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions.

We carried out the review as a result of concerns raised with us that the provider may not be meeting the fundamental standards of care. We planned the review to check whether the provider was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The review was led by a CQC inspector with remote access to a specialist dental adviser.

This question forms the framework for the areas we look at during the review.

This desk-based review was undertaken during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Due to the demands and constraints in place because of Covid-19 we looked at records the provider sent us about how the service is managed.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment we asked the following question:

  • Is it safe?

Our findings were:

Are services safe?

We found this practice was providing safe care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Background

Wheatley Dental Practice is in Wheatley and provides private and NHS treatment to patients of all ages.

The practice has two treatment rooms.

There is step-free access for people who use wheelchairs and pushchairs. Car parking spaces are available outside the practice.

The practice is owned by an individual who is the principal dentist there. They have the legal responsibility for meeting the requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations about how the practice is run.

The practice is open:

  • Monday 8.30am - 4.45pm
  • Tuesday 8.30am - 4.45pm
  • Wednesday 8.30am - 4.30pm
  • Thursday 8.30am - 4.45pm
  • Friday 8.30am - 1.00pm

Our key findings were:

The provider had infection control procedures in place which took account of published guidance, including procedures relating to the Covid-19 pandemic.

During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

When we visited Wheatley Dental Practice in October 2013 we found not all systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection were robust. We asked the provider to send us evidence to demonstrate they had taken action to address the issues we found.

The provider sent us a range of written information that showed us they had addressed the issues we identified on the previous inspection. We saw the provider had taken appropriate action to meet the requirements of current guidance to reduce the risk of infection.

9 October 2013

During a routine inspection

During our visit to Wheatley Dental Practice we met with the provider, Mrs Peers. Mrs Peers was on maternity leave at the time of our visit, but had continued to manage the practice, visiting at least one per week. We spoke with three members of staff. We spoke with five patients and looked at five patient records.

All of the patients we spoke with were very happy with the dental treatment they received. One patient told us 'they're excellent, very professional'. Another patient said 'they show you a print out of the x-rays. That makes a big difference. You know why you're here'. We looked at patient records which confirmed the treatment patients said they had received.

Patients we spoke with told us the practice was always clean and tidy; one patient said it was 'pristine'. The practice operated processes, to minimise the risk and spread of infection from dental instruments. However the practice did not operate systems across the practice to identify, assess and manage risks relating to infection. Current guidelines had not always been followed.

Staff told us they were supported to carry out their roles. We saw that staff received training specific to their job and that they received an annual review of their performance.

The practice had systems in place to seek and act on patient feedback.

During a routine inspection

The patients we spoke with praised the approach of the staff within the practice. They felt that all of the staff were friendly and approachable. Patients were happy with the information they had been given and the treatment they had received. The appointments system was described as 'flexible' and people said they had been given good post-treatment advice.
