The practice had a governance system that included policies and procedures, which were accessible to staff and were reviewed on a regular basis.

Systems and processes were mostly embedded, and the inspection did not highlight any significant issues or omissions. Areas requiring improvement were acted on immediately. For example, the practice manager from a neighbouring BUPA practice assured the inspection team that they would obtain documentation of fire safety checks and maintenance from the landlord of the building going forward. They had also scheduled staff meetings and staff appraisals for the month following our inspection.

Staff were aware of the importance of protecting patients’ personal information. Staff password protected patients’ electronic care records, and paper records were stored securely and complied with General Data Protection Regulations.

There were effective processes for identifying and managing risks, investigating incidents and accidents, and for receiving and acting on safety alerts. There were well-established processes for reporting, investigating, and learning from incidents. The BUPA lessons-sharing hub was used to record incidents in a central log. Learning and improvements were shared across the business through dental-specific communications and presentations.

The practice had systems and processes for learning, quality assurance and continuous improvement. This included undertaking audits according to recognised guidance.Audit templates were comprehensive and supported effective oversight.

Concerns and complaints were responded to appropriately, and outcomes were discussed to share learning and for improvement.

Staff had clear responsibilities, and systems of accountability to support good governance.

Staff wellbeing was supported through initiatives such as providing a fruit basket, alongside the wider wellbeing support provided by BUPA.

Staff feedback was obtained through meetings, surveys and informal discussions. They were encouraged to offer suggestions for improvements to the service, and they said these were listened to and acted upon, where appropriate.

The practice gathered feedback from patients, the public and external partners, and responded accordingly.

The practice had taken steps to improve environmental sustainability. Recycling was mandated across all BUPA practices, and the practice was looking to introduce wipeable whiteboards to use for daily checklists, which could be scanned and wiped for re-use each day.
