During an inspection looking at part of the service

Our last inspection in May 2013 identified some concerns that patients who used the service were not always protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had not been followed.

We carried out this follow up inspection to check that improvements had been made.

We found that the improvements required following our previous inspection had been fully completed and that patients who used the service were protected from the risk of infection because all plugs had been removed and overflows blocked for designated hand washing sinks. Defective upholstery had been replaced so that all dental chairs were now intact with impermeable surfaces. The flooring was coved to the wall to prevent accumulation of dirt where the floor meets the wall. The provider had reviewed their sterilisation procedure and all instruments were now bagged and dated and stored appropriately in the treatment rooms. All Basic Periodontal Examination (BPE) had been recorded and medical histories had been updated.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four patients who told us that they were happy with the service provided. Patients told us they were very satisfied with the practice. They said they never had to wait long for appointments, and in an emergency they had always been seen on the same day. One patient said 'I have always been very happy with this dental practice. Our whole family use the services and they are always accommodating'. Patients said their treatment plans were always explained and discussed with them, including choices about treatment and costs. Patients said that the practice was always clean, and all the staff where friendly and welcoming.

We found that patients were not protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had not been followed. We found that patients who use the service were protected from the risk of abuse because the provider had taken reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse. We found that patient's personal records including medical records were not always accurate.
