During an inspection looking at part of the service

During our inspection of 6 September 2013, we found that the provider did not have systems in place that ensured that patient's medical histories were updated.

During our inspection of 22 November 2013 we found that there were systems in place to update and record patient's medical histories. For example, we saw that a monthly audit of patient's medical histories had been implemented and identified actions had been addressed.

We looked at 19 patient records which confirmed their medical histories had been updated at a recent appointment.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with three members of staff as well as the registered person. We spoke with three patients who had received treatment on the day of our visit. We observed one patient receiving a consultation and treatment with their consent.

People told us that they were very happy with the care and treatment they received from the dentists and staff. One person told us that the dentist was 'fantastic'.

People told us that they were always asked for their consent before receiving any treatment. One person told us 'We always discuss the options and costs so I know what I am agreeing to'.

We saw that the practice was clean, free from clutter and well organised. Staff were knowledgeable about infection control, however, they had not received formal infection control training.

We saw that the practice had a complaints policy but were told that the practice had not received any complaints. People told us that they felt confident to make a complaint to the dentist if they had to.

During our visit we had some concerns about patient records. We sampled six patient records and saw that these were not all up to date. We spoke to the provider about this who told us that they would address this immediately.
