During an inspection looking at part of the service

During our inspection we saw that the issues raised at the last inspection had been looked into and significant progress made to develop systems to assess quality, including a programme of audits and learning from incidents. These systems are not yet completely in place and further work is required to ensure that they are robust.

We saw there were now systems in place for recording consent and monitoring that this was being done. People told us that they were asked for their consent prior to treatment being completed and that treatment options were discussed with them.

One person told us, "Never been more satisfied....Best fitting dentures I have had in years". Another said that everyone who worked at the dental centre was, "Pleasant and friendly," and that, "As dentists go it's a fantastic practice".

One person said that some of their appointments had either been cancelled or moved. When we spoke to the manager regarding this they told us that appointments are booked up to six months in advance and that one of the dentists was involved in teaching which was booked on a shorter notice period, this may have accounted for the cancellations. We spoke with three people all of whom were generally satisfied with the care and treatment provided.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with two people who were using the service.

The first person we spoke with was having root canal treatment and said that the dentist had not explained how many sessions of treatment the procedure would take. However, they said that the dentist always explained options and they were 'friendly'. They said they were nervous about going to the dentist and in the past had to be sedated to receive treatment, but the dentist at Homesteads Dental Care Centre made them feel very comfortable and relaxed and they didn't require sedation anymore.

The second person we spoke with said the dentist talked through the processes and options and explained everything well. They said they were never given any treatments they did not need and that they were very good at giving injections. They said that emergency appointments were easy to get but at times appointments could be cancelled by the practice at short notice, which was a problem because they sometimes had to wait a long time for another one.

We saw that staff interactions with people were very friendly and respectful.
