During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

During our visit in November 2012 we found the practice had a policy for preventing contamination of dental unit water lines, including appropriate water supply and maintenance schedule. However this had not been fully implemented in accordance with 'The Approved Code of Practice and Guidance (L8)'. We also observed that cleaning schedules were not in place within the treatment areas.

The provider wrote to us saying what action they had taken. They submitted information that demonstrated the policy for preventing contamination of dental unit water lines, including appropriate water supply and maintenance schedule, had been implemented in accordance with 'The Approved Code of Practice and Guidance (L8)'.

The provider also submitted information that demonstrated that cleaning schedules were in place within the treatment areas and appropriate records were maintained.

In addition, the provider informed us that a small area in the decontamination room where a gap between the floor and the wall had been identified, had coving put in place to prevent an accumulation of dust.

During a routine inspection

People told us that staff explained all the procedures and treatments to them and respected their decisions about their treatment and care. One person said, "the procedures are always talked through (by the dentist), the options are always discussed and why something needs to take place.'

People who used the service told us they were happy with the care and treatment they received at the practice. One person said, 'they (staff) do go out of their way in an emergency and when you're in pain, this is really important. It's a nice welcoming environment, (staff) they've always got a smile on their face' and 'they don't rush me through even if I've had to wait.'

People we spoke with told us the practice was always clean and tidy. One person told us the surgery was 'very clean, they have modernised (the surgery) and it's exceptionally clean.' However, we found that there were areas of non compliance with the infection control standards.

The provider had a satisfactory recruitment and selection procedure in place to ensure that staff were appropriately employed.

The provider had an appropriate system in place for gathering, recording and evaluating information about the quality and safety of care the service provides. People who used the service and their representatives were asked for their views about their care and treatment.
