Staff should be properly trained and supervised, and have the chance to develop and improve their skills (outcome 14)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by competent staff.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 5 December 2012, checked how people were cared for at each stage of their treatment and care and talked with people who use the service. We talked with staff.

Our judgement

People were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard.

Reasons for our judgement

We asked the staff about training courses they had attended. Staff told us that there was a range of courses and training that they had attended. Some of these courses took place in the practice, while others were held externally. We saw records and certificates that confirmed staff had attended training including emergency first aid.

The staff we spoke with told us that they were very happy working at the practice and that they received a good level of training and support. This meant staff knowledge and skills were being updated on a regular basis so that they remained competent in their roles. We looked at the staff training records and this showed that staff had attended different training relevant to their roles in dental practice.

Staff told us that they had regular supervision. The staff records we looked at confirmed this. One member of staff said that they felt, "Well supported". This meant that staff were being appropriately supported in their jobs.
