During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our last inspection in December 2012, we set compliance actions as we found that the system in place to manage risks to people who used the service was not fully effective.

We gave the provider short notice of our inspection to give them limited time to prepare the information that we needed. During this inspection we spoke with the registered manager and the registered provider who was also a dentist at the practice, we found that the provider had made the necessary improvements.

People were protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had been followed.

Staff were trained and supported to deliver care and treatment safely.

The provider had an effective system in place to identify, assess and manage risks to the health, safety and welfare of people who used the service and others.

During a routine inspection

During this inspection we conducted telephone interviews with ten people who used the service, we also spoke with the manager and staff at the dental practice on the day of our inspection.

People had the information they needed to help them make informed choices about their treatment. One person told us, 'I had all the information I needed and it was explained very well.'

People told us they had no concerns about the care and treatment that they received from the dentists at the practice. One person said, 'I am happy with the treatment and the after care was good.'

We saw that people received care and treatment in a clean and hygienic environment. People that we spoke with had no concerns about the cleanliness of the environment.

People that we spoke with were complimentary about the staff working at the practice. Staff were trained and supported to deliver care and treatment safely, however there were gaps in areas of training which could potentially impact on the delivery of care.

We saw that the provider had systems in place to monitor the service to ensure that people receive a quality service. People we spoke with confirmed that the treatment they received was of good quality. However the absence of CRB checks for some staff meant that the provider had not managed risks to people using the service effectively.
