During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our previous inspection on 28 January 2013, we identified that the provider did not meet essential standards of cleanliness and infection control in some areas. Therefore we set compliance actions which required the provider to make improvements. During this inspection we checked the provider's progress. We spoke with the registered manager and a member of staff. We also looked at records.

The provider had completed their action plan. We found that treatment rooms were clean and well organised and walls had been repaired. We also found that non-consumable items were all in date. A new system of auditing had been introduced to prevent them being used when out of date.

28 January 2013

During a routine inspection

As part of this inspection we spoke on the telephone with seven people who used the practice, a practice manager who was overseeing the practice at the time of our visit, two dentists, a receptionist and two dental nurses.

People that used the practice were highly complimentary about the care and treatment they received. Many of the people had been patients at the practice for many years. One person told us that although they no longer lived near the dentist they continued to go there because of the good care they received. People told us they were given enough information about their treatment options. One person told us, 'I have always had excellent treatment and attention'.

The practice was clean and well organised and there were arrangements in place to ensure equipment was cleaned after use. However, we found that some maintenance work was required to the walls in two treatment rooms to ensure effective cleaning could take place.

The dentists and staff that worked at the practice were suitably qualified and were supported by the provider to maintain their continuous professional development (CPD). In addition to this staff received training on how to recognise signs of abuse, action they should take if they suspected abuse and who to contact.

There were arrangements for monitoring the quality of the service. We saw that people were encouraged to provide feedback about the practice and we saw evidence of actions being implemented from this.
