Governance, management and sustainability
We saw there were clear and effective processes for identifying and managing risks, issues and performance.
Emergency equipment and medicines were available in line with guidance and appropriate checks of these had been implemented to ensure expired items were replaced as needed.
The practice had arrangements to ensure the safety of the X-ray equipment, and the required radiation protection information was available, including evidence of acting on recommendations. Staff responsible for radiation protection were receiving additional training to support them in their roles.
The sharps risk assessment now included the range of sharps used in the practice to ensure the risks from handling these were mitigated. They also now had access to occupational health services to enable staff to obtain advice, testing and vaccinations in the event of a sharps injury.
The practice had procedures to reduce the risk of Legionella, or other bacteria, developing in water systems, in line with a risk assessment. The recommendations had been acted on, and staff carried out and documented checks of water quality.
The practice had introduced additional checks and processes to ensure the recruitment policy was followed and appropriate records retained for all staff. This included obtaining Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks at the point of employment.
The practice had systems to obtain evidence of adequate immunity for vaccine preventable infectious diseases at the point of employment.
Staff covered by the principal dentist’s indemnity were provided with the details of the policy.
Systems had been improved to obtain evidence of up-to-date continuing professional development and mandatory training for all staff.
Antimicrobials were now consistently prescribed in line with national guidance from the College of General Dentistry. We shared tools and resources to support the ongoing review of this.
