All Inspections

24 April 2014

During a routine inspection

This inspection was to follow up compliance actions issued at the last inspection on 12 December 2013. The provider sent us an action plan and told us they would be compliant by 31 March 2014.

We found the practice had made improvements to meet the compliance actions set. This meant the provider ensured dentists were planning patient's treatment effectively to ensure their safety and welfare needs were met. We found there was now a system in place to ensure risks to patient's health, welfare and safety were managed effectively once they had been identified.

We spoke with five patients who were complementary about the service received. One person said 'brilliant, no complaints at all'. Another person complemented their dentist. They said 'brilliant, he's very nice and kind. He knows what the problem is and he's got a calming way about him'.

12 December 2013

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with 12 people who used the service. People spoken with were happy with how the service was provided overall. One person said 'fantastic, he always explains what he is doing, 100% no complaints at all'.

People told us they could express their views and were given appropriate support and information for their treatment choices. One person said 'the dentist gave me options and time to think about it, I wasn't rushed, he was very thorough'.

Records were not fully completed to ensure treatment could be planned to ensure people's health and welfare needs were met.

We spoke with two of the four dentists, the implant specialist, the dental therapist, four of the five dental nurses and a receptionist who were employed by the service. Dental staff had a good understanding of their responsibility in protecting vulnerable adults and children from abuse. We saw staff followed infection control guidance to ensure people using the service were protected from the risk of acquiring an infection.

The practice manager and provider had systems in place to monitor and assess the quality of the service. However, where improvements had been identified, they had not been appropriately addressed to ensure improvements had been made and sustained.

At the time of our inspection the provider did not have a registered manager in post. The service had not had a registered manager in post since November 2013. The provider informed us that they had a manager in post who would apply for registration in the near future. The practice manager in post had been in place since October 2013.
