All Inspections

4 February 2014

During an inspection in response to concerns

At the time of our inspection the manager at this service was not registered with The Care Quality Commission (CQC) for this location. However, the previous manager had not deregistered with CQC at the time of the inspection; therefore their name still remains on any reports until such time that this information is received.

Patients' needs were assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual treatment plan. We looked at the patient records for sixteen people. We saw that the information about patients' oral hygiene was recorded in their records along with the advice they had been given either by the dentist or hygienist.

Staff told us that the practice continually monitored their infection control procedures and that decontamination equipment was monitored for efficiency and effectiveness. The practice had carried out audits of other aspects of the service which had included an audit of record keeping in October 2013. Dentists continually assessed and monitored the x-rays they carried out to ensure they were of consistent quality.

We found that the information recorded in patient records was comprehensive and provided sufficient information about the treatment that was planned or had been carried out. There was also a record of discussions and treatment options that had been discussed with patients. This was in line with the guidance from the General Dental Council (GDC) in Standards for the Dental Team.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

At this inspection we looked at staff supervision and personal development. We did not seek patient's views on this subject.

During our inspection we saw records of recent staff performance reviews which had taken place for the support staff within the practice. We spoke with two members of staff who confirmed that they had recently taken part in a performance review. One member of staff said that they found it useful to be able to discuss their future. They appreciated the time to raise any issues relevant to their work.

Staff registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) continued to record training in relevant subjects.

3 October 2012

During a routine inspection

During and after our visit we spoke with five people who had recently received treatment at the practice.

People we spoke with told us that their dentist had explained their treatment options in a way they could understand. They all said that all the staff were polite and kind. One person told us "The dentists are true professionals, a credit to their profession."

Patient records showed that dentists had carried out full mouth examinations for people after taking details of their medical history. People told us that they were involved in discussions with their dentist about the type of treatment that would be suitable for them. Everybody was given a written treatment plan which meant they were aware of the proposed treatment.

One person we spoke with was very impressed with the cleanliness of the practice, not only in the treatment room but in all areas. All staff were very knowledgeable about the procedures and processes necessary for infection prevention and control.

The provider's records showed that staff had not received formal supervision and appraisals. However staff told us that they felt well supported by the registered manager and the provider. Staff told us about the training they had taken part in and its relevance to their work.

The service had a clear system for dealing with complaints. People were made aware of the complaints procedure through a leaflet available in the waiting room.
