Our view of the service
Field Lodge has a dual registration, and both providers are responsible for the service delivery at this location.
We undertook an assessment of Field Lodge between 29 April and 9 June 2026. We visited the service on 29 April 21 May. Field Lodge is a care home with nursing. It can accommodate up to 72 people. At the time of our visit, 58 people were living at the service which included 2 people in hospital. Accommodation was provided over 3 floors. Most people living at the service were living with dementia and some had nursing needs.
The inspection was prompted in part by concerns we received about the service. The last inspection had taken place in February 2023.
People and their relatives were involved in their assessments. People received safe and effective care and were protected from the risk of avoidable harm. People received their medicines as prescribed and staff monitored people’s health to support healthy living.
Systems were in place to protect people from the risk of infection and cross contamination and staff followed good practice. The service was clean, fresh and well-maintained.
Safe systems were in place for the recruitment of staff. People had individualised care plans, and the management of individual risks were undertaken by staff.
A complaints procedure was in place, and people were able to access this. The records showed that action had been taken in line with the policy.
Staff received regular training and had their competencies checked. Staff spoke favourably of the management team and felt listened to and consulted. The provider’s monitoring systems were effective.
Staff described a learning culture where ideas were encouraged, and improvements embedded across the service.
People's experience of this service
People told us staff were kind, respectful and genuinely caring, with one person saying, “The staff are brilliant. They will always help you with whatever you want. They run about after me. They put my hearing aids in every day. I feel well looked after.” Another commented, “Anything you ask for they will help you with it.”
People told us staff understood them well and tailored their approach accordingly, with one person saying, “The staff are getting to know me. They know I like a cup of tea during the day. They know I will sit in the chair for a while but then I have to go on the bed for half an hour because the chair is not very comfortable for sitting on all day.”
Relatives expressed confidence in the care provided. One relative said, “Care seems to be foremost on the minds of the staff. I am not worried that they are not looking after family member.”
People’s choice and independence were understood by all staff. People were supported to live as they wished, whether enjoying privacy in their own rooms or choosing to be sociable and take part in activities. One person told us, “I please myself when I get up or go to bed.” Another person said, “I can go out in the garden. It is very nice out there and there are several places to sit. Staff do things in the garden when the weather is good.”
Not all people were able to share their experiences verbally. However, observations showed people received care that met their needs and they had a good relationship with the staff. The atmosphere in the service was calm, and people appeared relaxed, cheerful and at ease around staff, who responded quickly and sensitively to needs, upheld dignity at all times and promoted independence ensuring people were empowered to do things for themselves.
