Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

This is the first assessment for this newly registered service. This key question has been rated good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. During our visit we saw numerous examples of kindness and compassion from staff when delivering support. People and relatives spoke positively about the support they received and described staff as caring and kind. One person said, “They are wonderful. Kind and caring all the time.”

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. People were respected and valued as individuals, with care designed around their choices and needs. Staff knew people well, and were able to use this knowledge to provide person-centred care. One person said, “They go above and beyond and are so very kind. Nothing is too much trouble.”

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were able to make their own choices, including how they wanted to spend their time and decorate their surroundings. Staff encouraged people to do as much as they safely could for themselves. People were supported to access a range of activities that they enjoyed. One person said, “My independence is encouraged.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. During our visit we saw staff quickly responding to people who needed support, and checking on people’s wellbeing as they moved around the building. One person told us, “They come straight away if I use my call button. If they are busy and I can wait they come back, but they always check first.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. Staff meetings took place, and staff told us they were able to raise any issues they had. One member of staff said, “If we want or need something they will get it for us.”
