Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity, and respect.

This is the first assessment for this newly registered service. This key question has been rated good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

Staff appeared to know people well, including their likes and dislikes. From our observations people and staff were seen to have a good rapport. Interactions were polite and good humoured. People said they liked the staff, adding, “They care and they check on me, I want it to work here” and “They let me go at my own pace, supportive and confidence building.”

Treating people as individuals

People care and support needed further development, taking into account their individual strengths, abilities, and aspirations.

Records showed and people told us their long-term goals were to live more independently. Information about the service and support offered included supporting people to build confidence and develop life skills in preparation for greater independence, as well as engaging in meaningful activities, both in and away from the home. However, we saw little evidence of meaningful activities and opportunities being provided.

Independence, choice and control

The provider did not always promote people’s independence, so people did not always know their rights and have choice and control over their own care, treatment, and wellbeing.

Routines were relaxed with people choosing how they spent their time. As both people were subject to restrictions, individual staff support was provided throughout the day and night to support activities. There was little evidence to show people took part in meaningful activities in and away from the home. Due to recent issues, one person was spending little time with staff, choosing to spend time at their family home.

We did note one person had recently joined a self-advocacy group, with the support from staff. The group was run by and for learning disabled people, enabling them to speak up on their rights and promote their interests in society.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern, or distress.

People were supported by a small stable staff team, who understood their individual needs and behaviours. The team was supported by mental health professionals, helping to ensure people’s needs were met. Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) plans were to be implemented, providing clear guidance for staff to follow about how to respond in different situations and reduce distress.

People felt staff listened to them and opportunities were provided for people to speak with staff privately. There was good communication between the team with daily handovers and regular team meetings.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.

Staff told us the team worked well together and morale was good. Staffing arrangements and the allocation of work were discussed during team meetings and handovers.

We were told well-being support was available for staff, with each member of the team being registered with an independent service, which offers support in areas such as financial issues and emotional/mental well-being.
