During a routine inspection

Patients were able to discuss treatment, medical history, fees and other matters behind closed doors in the treatment room. This ensured that patient's privacy was respected.

Care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people’s safety and welfare. The dentist was able to explain initial patient consultation and steps taken to help ensure that treatment was patient centred. This included a medical history, review of treatment options, explaining fees and obtaining patient consent at each stage.

None of the four patients we spoke with expressed concern about the safety of the environment where care and treatment was delivered. One patient described the dentist as, ”caring - a very nice man.”

We saw that the provider’s waiting area and treatment room were clean and clutter free. We spoke with four patients who were positive about the cleanliness of the treatment room and overall environment. One patient told us, "the practice is very clean, very nice" whilst another patient observed that they had “no issues” regarding the practice environment and level of cleanliness.

The provider told us that patient consent forms were obtained for new courses of treatment. We were also told that patient medical history questionnaires were updated at each visit, as necessary. This meant that the provider stored records required to protect the safety and wellbeing of patients.

During a routine inspection

Patients we spoke to indicated that they had been treated with respect and dignity. They expressed satisfaction with the care and treatment provided. The practice had a policy for ensuring that patients are treated with respect and dignity and their human rights are protected.

Patient made positive comments about staff and indicated that they had confidence in the principal dentist and other staff who attended to them. Assessments and treatment plans had been prepared for patients. Treatment had been given with the agreement and written consent of patients and this was confirmed by patients we spoke to.

The premises were clean and well maintained. There were arrangements for infection control checks and tasks. Staff were knowledgeable regarding infection control and decontamination procedures for equipment and instruments used. There was documented evidence that equipment used had been maintained and inspected by specialist contractors. However, the portable appliances had not been checked within the past twelve months. The registered provider promptly arranged for them to be tested the following week. The x ray safety inspection test report was not available. The registered provider reassured us that it had been checked and agreed to obtain a copy of the report from the company that carried out the test and forward it to us.
