During an inspection looking at part of the service

In May 2013 we carried out an inspection of this service. We judged, at that time, that improvements were needed to ensure people were always protected from the risks of unsafe or inappropriate care and treatment because accurate and appropriate records were not always maintained. We did not find any records for the accurate recording of the Class C controlled drugs received into and used within the surgeries. We also found the paper records used to record the amount of sedation were not always accurately completed although computerised records were kept up to date. This meant there were inaccuracies between the computerised and paper records held. During our visit on 2 July 2013 we found improvement had been made. And that the service now had an accurate record for Class C controlled drugs received into and being used within the surgeries.

During a routine inspection

Four patients consented to interviews. They told us that they understood the treatment they were offered and advised us they had been given written treatment plans. One patient told us: "The dentist is brilliant. "

We spoke with the dentist who was in surgery he told us he discussed the medical history with the patient and we were shown the system which was in place for flagging up a medical alert. This meant that the staff were aware of any relevant medical information that may affect the patient's treatment.

We observed one patient journey through the practice. This followed the patient from their arrival at reception to the treatment room and back to reception. People's personal records including medical records were accurate and fit for purpose. We saw evidence of a regular card audit to check that the right information was being recorded. Good professionalism and communication was evidenced between all staff and patients.

We observed the practice was clean and well maintained and this was confirmed by the patients we interviewed. A dental nurse showed us the decontamination cycle. The provider was meeting essential requirements of HTM01-05 and had plans in place to meet best practice.

We spoke with three members of staff who confirmed that they had their learning needs identified and that there was enough training provided for them.

We saw records which showed the practice in the main to be compliant with current legislation.

During a routine inspection

At the time of the inspection there were no patients available for us to speak to. However, the provider carries out regular surveys and the results we saw showed that patients were generally very satisfied with the staff and service provided.
