All Inspections

28 April 2017

During a routine inspection

We carried out this announced inspection on 28 April 2017 under Section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered provider was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a CQC inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we always ask the following five questions:

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it caring?

• Is it responsive to people’s needs?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

Are services safe?

We found that this practice was providing safe care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Are services effective?

Background

Allen & Caspersonn Dental Surgery is based in Fulham and provides NHS and private treatment to patients of all ages.

The dental team includes one dentist, one receptionist, one dental nurse and a dental hygienist.

The practice has three treatment rooms, a decontamination room and a reception waiting area.

The practice is owned by an individual who is the principal dentist there. They have legal responsibility for meeting the requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations about how the practice is run.

On the day of inspection we collected 27 CQC comment cards filled in by patients and spoke with three other patients. This information gave us a positive view of the practice.

During the inspection we spoke with one dentist, one dental nurse and a receptionist. We looked at practice policies and procedures and other records about how the service is managed.

The practice is open - Monday to Friday 9:00 am – 5:30 pm, with early 8.00am opening on Wednesday and Friday.

30 September 2013

During a routine inspection

People's dental needs were assessed and their consent obtained before any treatment was planned. Following one person's appointment with the dentist they told us the service had been ''very good''.

People felt they had been given sufficient information about their care and treatment. A medical history was taken from each person and any allergies or medical conditions were recorded and discussed during the initial appointment. People were given aftercare advice following treatment, which included who to contact in an emergency. There was emergency equipment available and staff had received basic life support training.

Staff received appropriate professional development. This ensured they met their continual professional development (CPD) points in order to maintain their professional membership with the General Dental Council (GDC).

People were treated in an environment that was clean and hygienic. All staff had undertaken training in infection control and understood their responsibility in reducing the risk and spread of infection. There were effective systems in place to reduce the risk of infection. The dental nurse was able to describe the decontamination process to us and provided evidence to show that checks were carried out on the equipment used.

There were effective systems in place to monitor the quality of the service. Staff meetings took place monthly to discuss the feedback that people had provided and any improvements that could be made.
