All Inspections

17 July 2013

During a routine inspection

At the time of this inspection ten people were being supported at Bramley Lodge on a regular basis. On the day of our visit no people were staying overnight in the home; however one person who regularly stayed there was receiving day support from staff. This person was unable to communicate with us verbally but we could see that they were relaxed and that staff understood their needs.

We found that the arrangements in place to ensure the cleanliness of the home and to control the risk of infection were effective. people were supported by staff to take their medicines as prescribed and the management of medicines was safe. Staff ensured that people received food and drinks of their choice that promoted their general health. People were supported to be as independent as possible, such as doing their own shopping, cooking and managing their medicines.

We saw that staff were confident and competent in their roles. This was because they had been recruited safely and effectively.

During a routine inspection

We were unable to directly communicate with people using the service due to their cognitive impairments. However we spent some time observing them being supported and asked their families about their experiences. Families we spoke with told us that they felt that that their relatives' privacy and dignity was respected by staff and that staff knew how to communicate with individuals to ensure that they understood their wishes. They told us that their relatives were always keen to go to Bramley Lodge. They felt involved with how their relative was supported and they were aware of their support plans. One person told us that their relative 'likes the chilled atmosphere.'

Relatives told us that they felt able to raise any concerns they had with staff and that they would respond appropriately. They also told us that staff were very friendly and approachable and that they knew how to meet people's needs. They told us that they felt that staff were competent to provide support to individuals. They made comments such as 'They chat when they pick him up and find out anything new'.

Families confirmed that the activities people participated in were suitable and sufficient. They told us that their relatives liked swimming and cooking. They also said that they felt people were safe at Bramley Lodge. They told us that staff were caring and aware of the hazards to the people they were supporting.

As part of our inspection we also spoke with social workers responsible for placing people at the service, who told us that that staff understood safeguarding and were proficient in safe holding techniques. They also told us that staff understood the needs of people and communicated well with the local authority about all aspects of care.
