During an inspection looking at part of the service

We did not speak with any people using the service during this inspection visit.

At our last inspection visit to the service in May 2013 we had some concerns around staff training, supervision and appraisal and we asked the provider to take action to address those concerns.

During this inspection we found that all staff had received training in safeguarding adults and children and that relevant training certificates were now on individual staff files.

Evidence was available to demonstrate that each member of the staff team had received one to one supervision with the provider and at least one annual appraisal.

We found that satisfactory improvements had been made to provide evidence that staff were receiving training, supervision and appraisal to support them in providing care and treatment to people who use services.

28 May 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with people who used the service who told us that they were happy with the treatment and service they received. Comments included, '[The dentist] explains absolutely everything to me before I have any treatment, the service is totally brilliant' and 'My treatments have always been fully explained to me including any further treatment I may need in the future'.

We found the reception area to be light and bright with comfortable seating for those waiting for treatment. There was a range of leaflets and posters with information on treatments, oral hygiene and costs.

We found parking to be a little difficult due to the recently opened tram service, which means there is now only resident permit holder parking on the main road and all surrounding areas. The practice has a parking permit for use in emergency situations, for example dropping off someone with mobility difficulties.

Treatment records were maintained in paper and electronic format and these were updated following every visit, including asking the patient for a medical history update.

Systems were in place to minimise the risk of cross infection and a member of the staff team took us through the decontamination processes and other hygiene procedures that are followed by staff to maintain good and appropriate standards of infection control throughout the practice.

Staff training records need improvement.

Staff did not receive formal and recorded supervision and annual appraisal.
