All Inspections

5 January 2023

During a routine inspection

We carried out this announced comprehensive inspection on 5 January 2023 under section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered practice was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a Care Quality Commission, (CQC), inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we always ask the following 5 questions:

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it caring?

• Is it responsive to people’s needs?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

  • The dental clinic was visibly clean and well-maintained.
  • The practice had infection control procedures which reflected published guidance.
  • Staff knew how to deal with medical emergencies. Appropriate medicines and life-saving equipment were available.
  • The practice had systems to help them manage risk to patients and staff.
  • Safeguarding processes were in place and staff knew their responsibilities for safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.
  • The practice had staff recruitment procedures which reflected current legislation.
  • The clinical staff provided patients’ care and treatment in line with current guidelines.
  • Patients were treated with dignity and respect and staff took care to protect their privacy and personal information.
  • Staff provided preventive care and supported patients to ensure better oral health.
  • The appointment system took account of patients’ needs.
  • There was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Staff felt involved and supported and worked as a team.
  • Staff and patients were asked for feedback about the services provided.
  • Complaints were dealt with positively and efficiently.
  • The dental clinic had information governance arrangements.

Background

Rockingham House Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry is in Pontefract in West Yorkshire and provides private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

There is a removable ramp to give level access to the practice for people who use wheelchairs and those with pushchairs. Car parking spaces, including dedicated parking for disabled people, are available at the practice. The practice has made other adjustments to support patients with additional needs. These include the provision of a ground floor treatment room and an accessible toilet.

The dental team includes 3 dentists, 7 dental nurses, 2 dental hygiene therapists, 2 receptionists and a practice manager. The practice has 3 treatment rooms.

During the inspection we spoke with the principal dentist, 4 dental nurses 2 receptionists and the practice manager. We looked at practice policies and procedures and other records about how the service is managed.

The practice is open:

Monday to Friday from 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm

There were areas where the provider could make improvements. They should:

  • Review the practice protocols regarding audits for prescribing of antibiotic medicines taking into account the guidance provided by the College of General Dentistry.

  • Improve the practice's processes for the control and storage of substances hazardous to health identified by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002, to ensure risk assessments are undertaken.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with five people who used the service and they all said they were very happy with the care and treatment they had received at the dental practice. One person said, 'My oral health has improved 100%.' Another person said, 'They have explained the whole cleaning regime to me which has been really good.' Another person said, 'They go through the measurement of pockets around my teeth so I understand what is happening.' Another person said, 'It's very good, in fact it's excellent.'

Staff told us people received good care and treatment, and their needs were appropriately met. They said people who used the service received support which was planned to make sure it met their individual circumstances.

We looked at a number of records and audits which confirmed regular checks were being carried out to ensure the service was safe and effective.

People were cared for, or supported by, suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff.
