During an inspection looking at part of the service

Our inspection on 9 January 2014 found that patients who used the service were not always protected from the risk of abuse because Medway Dental Care had not taken reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent abuse from happening. We also found that staff recruitment was unsatisfactory and personnel files did not contain all the required documentation.

Compliance actions were set asking the provider to take action regarding these concerns. They wrote to inform us that they had taken action and put measures in place to rectify the areas of concern found at the inspection.

We followed up on our inspection of 9 January 2014 to check that action had been taken to meet the compliance actions set. We found that Medway Dental Care was able to demonstrate that they were meeting all of the compliance actions set in order to rectify the areas of concern identified at that inspection.

During a routine inspection

Medway Dental Care provides both NHS and private care to adults and children. The principal dentist was supported by two dental nurses, two hygienists and a receptionist.

We spoke with three people about the care and treatment they received. One person told us that whilst they didn't like going to the dentist they, "Enjoyed coming here. They are very good and it's always a calm experience". People told us they were always included in discussions about their treatment and were always clear about cost of all treatment options available.

During the inspection we spoke with staff and looked at patient records, staff records, policies and procedures. Staff we spoke with told us that they enjoyed working at the service.

We found that the practice provided a clean environment for treating patients and equipment used was satisfactorily maintained.

People who used the service were not always protected from the risk of abuse, because the provider had taken reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent abuse from happening.

Staff recruitment was unsatisfactory and personnel files did not contain all the required documentation.

We saw that records were stored securely, and were well maintained and appropriately completed. Quality monitoring processes were in place and ensured that the practice was continually evaluating services provided and the outcomes for people who used the service.

There was an effective complaints system available.
