During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our last inspection in 2013 we identified people who used the service were not fully protected from the risk of abuse because the provider had not taken sufficient steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent abuse from happening.

At this inspection, there were no patients for us to speak with as there were no treatments taking place at the practice.

We spoke with the two dental nurses who were working that day as both dentists who worked at the practice were not available on the day of our inspection. The dental nurses told us about the steps they had taken to ensure people who used the service were safe. This included a review of staff training. We saw certificates to evidence the two dentists, the two dental nurses, and the receptionist had recently received safeguarding training in the protection of vulnerable adults and children.

The staff team had also updated their procedures about the prevention of abuse to include information about multiagency procedures for safeguarding adults in Wiltshire and Swindon.

One dental nurse we spoke with told us they found both the training and the update information useful.

9 September 2013

During a routine inspection

We had the opportunity to speak with three patients who told us that they were very satisfied with the service. They said that the dentist always took great care and explained their treatment options. There was information about the service, treatment options and costs in the waiting room.

People's care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that met their needs. People told us that if they needed treatment they had a treatment plan with the costs. They also said that the dentist took a medical history and asked them to update this.

People were treated in an environment which was clean and hygienic. The people we spoke with told us that the surgery was always clean. They also said how safe they felt with the staff. There was information about child protection and some staff had received training about protecting children from abuse. However there was no information about safeguarding adults to help staff recognise signs of abuse.

There was a process to give comments and feedback so people could give their views about the service. There were risk assessments and auditing systems to make sure the service provided was safe.
