Effective

Not all regulations met

28 May 2025

We found this practice was not providing effective care in accordance with the relevant regulations. We will be following up on our concerns to ensure the provider has made the required improvements.

During our inspection of this key question, we found concerns related to:

the completeness of patient care records and

the practice not having an effective system to monitor patients’ referrals to other dental or health care professionals.

These concerns were in breach of Regulation 17 (Good governance) of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014.

You can find more details of our concerns in the detailed findings below.

Delivering evidence-based care and treatment

Not all regulations met

We looked at a sample of patient care records of all clinicians working in the practice. Whilst some clinicians maintained detailed patient care records in line with recognised guidance, one clinician did not.

The practice did not have effective systems in place to monitor referrals to other dental or healthcare professionals, including the referral of patients with suspected cancer under the national faster diagnosis standard.

On the day of the inspection, we discussed clinical care with one of the dentists working at the practice, who was the only clinician available on the day.

Dentist kept up-to-date with current evidence-based practice, and had the skills, knowledge and experience to carry out their roles. They obtained patients’ consent for treatment in line with legislation and guidance and understood their responsibilities under the Mental Capacity Act 2005. The dentist described how they involved patients’ relatives or carers when appropriate and made sure they had enough time to explain treatment options clearly.

The dentist understood their role in ensuring that people who used the service received person-centred, care and treatment, that was appropriate, met their needs and was reflective of their personal preferences. Preventive oral health care was encouraged.
