During an inspection looking at part of the service

This inspection was to follow up on issues we identified in our previous inspection. The provider sent us an action plan to demonstrate how they would address the shortfall.

We examined cleanliness and infection control in conjunction with the Department ofHealth 'Health Technical Memorandum 01-05: decontamination in primary care dental practices' (HTM01-05).

The dental treatment rooms were clean and tidy which aided cleaning and prevented the accumulation of dust.

The provider had an audit schedule to identify infection risks.

The provider had implemented a plan to ensure the fixtures and fittings in the treatment room were in line with guidance from HTM01-05.

During a routine inspection

We spoke to the two dentist partners, three members of staff and four people who used the service. At the time of the inspection the dental practice was not taking any further NHS patients.

The people we spoke with told us they were satisfied with their dental treatment. One person said "it's excellent! It's a popular practice. A relaxed approach." Another person told us "I've been coming for some years. It's friendly and relaxed. I have no issues with the dental treatment."

The people we spoke with agreed they had no problem getting a routine or emergency appointment. People told us they were informed of their treatment costs.

We found the dentist ensured people's care and treatment was safe and effective. There was emergency equipment available. The provider had all the emergency drugs recommended by the British National Formulary advice for dental practices.

People we spoke with were satisfied with the cleanliness of the practice. We found some of the fixtures and fittings of the dental surgeries were not suitable to reduce the risk of cross infection. The provider did not follow guidance from the Department of Health HTM01- 05. The provider had not implemented an effective cleaning schedule.

Staff told us they worked well as a team and were well supported. Staff attended regular training appropriate to their role and responsibilities. Overall the provider had a system in place to monitor the quality of the service.
