During an inspection in response to concerns

We carried out this visit because we had received information of concern.

During our inspection we spoke with the dentist, the practice manager and a member of practice staff. We reviewed records relating to the management of the services. Observed the processes for maintaining cleanliness and reducing the risk of infection. We also checked the equipment in use at the practice.

We found records were kept safely and were comprehensive. Patient records and items with a patient name on were kept out of public view.

The practice had undertaken most actions to reduce the risk of cross infection. However, some practices to maintain standards of cleanliness could be improved.

Most equipment at the practice had been maintained and serviced in accordance with manufacturers' instructions and was fit for purpose. However, one x-ray machine had not been serviced and was not certified safe to use. The provider took this machine out of service during our inspection.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with six people who use the service. People we spoke with told us they had been going to the same practice for many years. They told us they were happy with the way the dentist and his team looked after their teeth and had no complaints. One person told us, 'it might not be modern but I am more than happy going there.'

We viewed six patient records. The practice did not use a computer system and patient's treatment notes were hand written onto records. We noted records were kept in a locked cupboard within a room that had a lockable door.

The practice was situated on the first floor and consisted of a waiting room and one surgery. The practice manager had their own office and there were toilet facilities for both staff and patients. The practice also had two rooms which were currently being used as storage. We viewed the surgery and found it to be clean and tidy. The practice had systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection. We spoke with staff regarding the cleaning of used instruments and found procedures to be in line with guidelines from the Department of Health.

The practice consisted of one dentist, one nurse, one receptionist and a part time practice manager. Most staff had worked at the practice for many years and said they felt supported by other colleagues. Staff were given opportunities to take appropriate training.
