During an inspection looking at part of the service

We originally inspected the practice in February 2014, during that inspection we found a number of concerns which we asked the provider to address.

When we inspected the practice again in May 2014, to check that the provider had taken action to address the concerns, we found that the provider had addressed most of the concerns; however some outstanding action remained relating to training and support for staff.

We inspected the practice in September 2014 to review training and support the provider had now put in place. On this inspection we found that the provider had improved the monitoring of training and annual appraisal was now in place.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

This was a follow up inspection to the inspection we completed in February 2014. We identified concerns with the infection control procedures, the professional development of the dental staff and the way complaints were handled. During this inspection we did not need to talk to people as we needed to examine the paperwork.

We found the provider had made improvements to the infection control procedures. We found that the dental surgeries were clean and there was evidence to show that the communal areas were cleaned on a daily basis. We found that complaints were filed together in the complaints folder and no new complaints had been received since the last inspection.

We found that there had been improvements to the support and professional development the dental staff received. However, we found that not all of the dentists had completed basic training and there was no evidence to show the professional development they had received.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four people who used the service and three relatives. People told us that they were happy with the service and they understood their treatment options. One person told us that they had been scared about their appointment but the dental professional had helped them to relax and had explained how the treatment worked.

We found that people were provided with adequate information about the treatment options that were available and people were supported to understand the impact of their treatment. We found that people's needs were assessed and people were involved in making decisions about their treatment.

We found that there were not appropriate arrangements in place to ensure adequate infection control measures were established and staff were not supported with adequate professional development. We found that the provider had a suitable complaints procedure however the complaints records did not show that complaints were adequately investigated.
