During a routine inspection

We spoke with four patients who told us the service provided appropriate information and support regarding their treatment. We also observed the treatment for three patients with their consents. The patients were positive about the care and treatment they received. A patient said, "I have been coming here for many years and I am very happy with everything".

We saw patients were given sufficient time to make a decision about the treatment options available. Patients told us they were asked about changes in their medical condition each time they attended the practice. This ensured staff were aware of the changes and any associated risks.

There were effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection. The practice was clean and hygienic. Staff followed their procedures for cleaning and sterilising all instrument and followed the Department of Health's essential standards.

There were systems to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service the patients received including regular surveys. There were audits, covering certain aspects of the service which were used to improve the quality of service provided. Patients felt confident to raise any concerns with the dentist and told us they were sure they would be listened to.

During a routine inspection

People were positive about the care and treatment that they received. They said that the treatment plan and options were explained fully and they felt that they had 'very good' information in order to make an informed choice.

People said that the staff and the dentist' makes you feel at ease.' Another person said 'they take time to get to know you and explain everything at the start.'

They told us that they were given information about the fees at the beginning of their treatment. People said that they had been coming to the same dentist since the eighties. Two patients told us that they did not want the dentist to retire.

We were told that the staff were friendly, courteous and that they were always treated with respect and their privacy was maintained. They said they did not usually have to wait long for appointments. Following their first visit for assessment appointments for treatment were relatively quick. They reported that the dental practice was 'homely' and there were a lot of leaflets 'to browse through in the waiting room' which they said was helpful.
