During a routine inspection

We spoke with three relatives, who told us they were happy with the support provided to their family members. Relatives told us they were involved and consulted about their family members care plans and confirmed that they were kept informed of any health issues as they arose.

We spoke with several people using the service, those that were able to express their views told us, they told us they were happy with the support they received from the staff team. Comments included, 'the staff are a friendly bunch and we have a laugh and joke together.' And 'staff are very helpful, they are always asking me if I'm alright.'

We observed that people were supported to maintain their dignity, such as people's appearance, which was maintained to a good standard and expressed people's identity and personal style.

People were supported and encouraged to participate in activities, this ranged from one to one activities to group activities.

All of the compliance actions left at our last visit in September 2012 have now been addressed. Information was now recorded in care plans seen regarding people's capacity to consent to their care. Staff had received updates in training and future training had been booked for staff. Repairs identified at the last inspection have been undertaken to ensure a safe environment was maintained.

People's diverse needs, such as their religious and cultural needs were considered and met within plans of care.

We spoke with four visitors who told us they were very happy with the care provided to their relatives. Visitors told us they were involved and consulted about their relatives care plans. Visitors told us visiting was flexible and said staff were always welcoming towards them.

Visitors told us that the staff contacted them if there were any issues or concerns with their relative's health. Visitors also told us they were kept informed of any changes. Comments from visitors included, 'so, so pleased with the care, good staff, very helpful' and 'the staff here are good with the people living at the service.' One visitor told us 'when x was admitted to hospital, staff visited them in hospital.'

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 had not been used consistently in people's records to ensure their safety when they were unable to make an informed decision for themselves about an aspect of their life.

Not all staff were up to date in all areas of training and some staff required refresher updates to ensure they were following current practice.

Relatives told us they were able to raise any concerns about care and support with the staff team. Comments included, 'not had a reason to make a complaint, but I am aware of how to make a complaint.'

We spoke to some relatives of people living at the service. We were told 'my relative has lived here for about 12 months. The staff are fantastic, my relative has improved physically since moving here. The nursing care is very good and I am kept informed if there are any issues.'

When asked about the food on offer one relative said 'they have a choice of two meals at lunch and sandwiches and lighter food at tea. But I think they would provide other things for people'. One person using the service told us 'the food is OK, they usually get what I want. I have specific dietary needs and they are met'.

We were also told 'the staff turn me over at night and move me around occasionally during the day so that my pressure sore is managed'.
