During an inspection looking at part of the service

People received care from staff who were patient and supportive, and took time to ensure people understood care tasks and activities. Before people received any care or treatment they were asked for their consent and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes. Where people did not have the capacity to consent to care and treatment, appropriate arrangements were in place to ensure that any care delivered was in people's best interests.

During a routine inspection

Many of the people we met during the inspection were not able to tell us about their experience of receiving care. We therefore used the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI). SOFI is a specific way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk with us. Using this we saw that, on the whole, people received care from staff who understood their needs, and took time to ensure that people were comfortable and happy. We also saw that in a small number of cases staff did not always put people's needs first.

Where people could share their experience with us, they were positive in their opinions of Swinton Lodge. One person said 'the activities are pretty good, there's a lot to do.' This person also told us 'they treat me as an adult.' Another person we spoke with told us they enjoy their meals at Swinton Lodge, and told us that they liked the staff.

People, who were able to comment, said they felt the service was run in a well organised way and that their views were sought and acted upon. One person said: 'when they did a questionnaire with me I told them what I thought. It is good here.' Another person told us that they enjoyed the music the staff played and two other people said there had been an increase in the activities provided, there was 'more to do, it is more lively', they said.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

When carrying out this inspection we mostly spent time with people who could not tell us abou their experience of receiving care at Swinton Lodge due to their complex needs. We met one person who told us that she would like more choice at breakfast time, and another who told us that they didn't like it when another person in the home became distressed.
