During an inspection looking at part of the service

We visited the practice and spoke with the practice manager and staff at Dr Parkash Photay Ampleforth Road. We inspected the processes for supporting people who had undergone sedation and we found that people were being supported safely during their dental treatment at the practice.

We inspected the premises' fixtures and fittings and equipment used for decontamination procedures and disposal of clinical waste, and we found that people were adequately protected against risks of unsafe or unsuitable premises.

We looked at staff training information and spoke with staff and found that people were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard. We found that improvements had been made in the provision and planning of staff training, supervision and professional development, and the provider had met the standard required. The provider had a structured planning system in place for staff supervision, and to help staff to plan clinical practice training in order to maintain their professional development.

During a routine inspection

People who used the service we spoke with told us they were happy with the service they received, and that the dentists involved them in decisions about their proposed treatment. One person said: 'I needed to have treatment from a previous dentist corrected, and wasn't sure what to do, but the advice I got was really good'. People told us the dentists took time to allow them to speak with them and provided information to help them to understand the treatment proposed. People said that the dentists had always asked them for an update on their health at each visit. Everyone we spoke with said they were fully informed, given choices and were very happy with the service provided.

People told us they were always treated in a respectful manner, and the dentists and staff took time to get to know them when they first came to the practice and were friendly and helpful. People's care and treatment was assessed and planned, but people's needs regarding manual handling was not always being assessed to protect them from falls.

The practice treatment rooms and staff practices in these areas were clean and hygienic, but other areas of the premises were not fully maintained in a good state of cleanliness, for example the fridge and drinks making area had not been cleaned properly. The premises were not suitably maintained, for example; some walls had stains, one worktop had a broken surface, and waiting room chairs had stains and were obstructing hallways.

Staff were qualified but some other training relevant to their work was not consistently provided, for example manual handling. Staff formal supervision was not consistently happening.
