During an inspection looking at part of the service

When we inspected Mr Khiroya, Leys Road, on 22 January 2014, we found that people were not fully protected from the risk of infection. This was because some systems designed to assess the risk of and to prevent, detect and control the spread of infection were lacking, or did not meet specification. We judged this to have a minor impact on people using the service.

We inspected the service again, to check improvements had been made. During this inspection, we found that staff were testing and recording water temperatures on a monthly basis, as part of the service's measures to prevent a contaminated water supply.

We also found that staff were now using an antimicrobial solution as part of the flushing (the continuous running of water for a period of time designed to reduce bacterial growth in water lines and pipework) of dental unit water lines (DUWLs). We saw that the service maintained records of this process. This meant there were now appropriate systems in place to reduce the risk of incidence of Legionella and/or a contaminated water supply.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection of Mr Khiroya, Leys Road, the people we spoke with said they received good explanations and advice about their care from the dentist. They told us they felt well informed about their dental care. People said they felt the surgery was clean. They told us they felt the dental staff team were professional and knowledgeable and they had never needed to complain about the service. One person said: "The dentist is always helpful and I'm happy to continue as a patient here." Another person said: "I've been coming here years and don't intend to change that."

During our inspection, we found each person's chronology of treatment had been documented. We found that each person had their medical history and any risk factors specific to them reviewed and recorded. We saw that arrangements were in place to deal with foreseeable emergencies, including the provision of items for use in an emergency.

We found that staff were appropriately qualified and registered and receiving professional development relevant to their roles. We saw the environment was clean. However, some processes designed to prevent the risk of infection were lacking or did not meet specification.

We found the service had a complaints system in place. Information about the complaints procedure was available to people who use the service.
