During an inspection looking at part of the service

At the time of our last inspection the provider was not fully meeting the standards for supporting staff; People had been cared for by staff that were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard. However, staff had not received formal or documented supervision and not all staff had been regularly formally appraised. The provider told us that an appraisal system would be introduced along with a system of staff 'self-evaluation'.

During our visit we met with the practice manager, looked at four dental nurses' training files and spoke with three dental nurses. Staff we spoke with felt well supported by the practice. One said 'I get a lot of support. The dentist does a lot of in-house training'; 'If I have a problem I pop in and see the practice owner'.

The provider had secured high standards of care by creating an environment where clinical excellence could do well. We saw that an appraisal system had been introduced. We looked at appraisal records and saw that feedback had been given to staff and that strengths and weaknesses had been discussed. The appraisals had identified training and development needs.

Staff we spoke with were positive about the appraisal process. One said 'It was great. It boosted my confidence'.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four people who used the services off the dental practice. All of the people we spoke with said that they were happy with the service they received. One person said 'I travel a long way to come here, but it is worth it, the treatment is excellent'. Another person said 'it is always very neat and tidy' another person said that the practice was 'always spotless'.

We found people's views and experiences were taken into account in the way the service was provided and delivered in relation to their care. People's privacy was respected and they experienced care, treatment and support which met their needs and protected their rights

People who used the service were protected from the risk of abuse, because the provider had taken reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent abuse from happening.

People were protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had been followed.

People were cared for by staff that were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard. However, staff did not receive formal, documented supervision or performance appraisal.

The provider had effective systems in place to monitor quality and safety.
