All Inspections

During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

We carried out this desk top review following our inspection in January 2013. On this inspection we found a number of concerns in relation to infection control and management of medicines. We also found that the provider did not have a formal process of gaining people's views of the service. We set a compliance action for the provider to improve their monitoring and assessing of their service provision.

We found the provider had taken necessary steps to ensure they were assessing and monitoring their service effectively.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our previous inspection on 3 January 2013 we found significant concerns in relation to the provider not following appropriate guidance in relation to infection control and common dental emergencies. We inspected Abingdon Street Dental Surgery to check that they had addressed the concerns identified.

During this inspection we found the provider had made significant improvements to ensure people who used the service were protected from the risk of infections. The provider now had appropriate arrangements in place to protect people's health and welfare in an emergency.

At our last inspection we also found concerns in relation to how the service identified risks in relation to people's health and welfare and how the service sought people's views of the service to influence how it was run. We did not review this standard during this inspection because we needed to allow the service more time to ensure they have effective systems in place to assess and monitor the service.

3 January 2013

During a routine inspection

This practice was independently run by one dentist. During our inspection we spoke with four people who used the service, the dentist and a recently recruited dental nurse. We also looked at three treatment records from people who used the service.

Three out of four of the people we spoke with told us they were very happy with the service provided. They said the dentist was 'very good', 'never had any problems and always referred to other specialists quickly'. One person told us 'I had a tooth taken out and didn't feel a thing'.

One person told us they were not happy with recent treatment provided and were going to consider discussing this with the dentist. We looked at the practice complaints log which showed there had been no complaints raised in the last year.

During our inspection we found the practice had not followed appropriate guidance in relation to common dental medical emergencies and infection control practices to ensure people were safe.

We also found concerns in relation to how the service identified risks that could affect people's health and welfare.
