Score: 3

During our visits we observed people making choices and expressing their preferences. One person was supported daily to apply make up, during the visit they brought their lip gloss to staff so it could be reapplied. The person’s care plan confirmed this was important to them.

Staff understood the importance of supporting people according to their preferences. Staff gave examples of the choices people were offered, and how their independence was promoted. One person was supported to regularly exercise on their indoor and outdoor bike to help keep their weight balanced, which they and their relatives were happy with.

Care plans detailed people's preferences as to how people liked their care to be delivered and provided information about people's social, cultural and religious needs. Care plans would benefit from more information about people’s goals and aspirations. The registered manager was aware this was an area that required development and plans were in place to include this information.

People had choice and control about their care and were involved in decision making. Some people told us about the activities they were supported to do which was led by their preferences. People were supported to spend time with people who were important to them. Some relatives shared concerns that people were not encouraged sufficiently to eat well and make healthy choices. These issues were being addressed when brought to the attention of the management team.
